The Ultimate Eco-Friendly Gardening Checklist

Guest post by Greg Niewold

Anyone who loves to garden knows that one of the best parts of winter is looking ahead to spring: the season of planting. This year as you’re dreaming and planning, why not think about trying some eco-friendly strategies in your garden? Whether you’re a total newbie or a veteran grower, you may be surprised to learn how little steps toward sustainability could improve your everyday garden operations. With eco-friendly approaches, not only will your garden be greener and gentler to the environment, but you’ll possibly save costs and improve your yield, too.

With spring around the corner, there’s never been a better time to think strategically about your gardening. Have you considered, for example, using a rain barrel to collect rainwater? Collecting rain not only takes advantage of a natural water source, but it also reduces erosion, not to mention cuts costs on your water bill. With just a single inch of rain running off your house, you can save hundreds of gallons of water  to use for your plants!

Here’s another idea: If you’ve relied on chemical herbicides or pesticides in the past, make this the year to drop them. Although many people rely on these substances to suppress weeds, the truth is, they’re toxic to the environment and humans. The same spray you use to kill weeds could be harming your health! Replace them with more natural weed and pest-control options, such as attracting beneficial insects to your garden to control pests. It’ll be better for you and your whole garden environment.

These are only a couple of examples of the possibilities for growing more sustainably in your home garden. Have you considered composting or buying garden furniture secondhand? Did you know watering plants early in the morning will minimize evaporation? There are so many ways to make your garden greener! To get further inspiration, take a look at the attached resource, which provides a list of eco-friendly gardening ideas, grouped by category. Read it to find a variety of great possibilities you can try.
