How to Create a Kitchen Garden (Infographic)

Many of us live in situations where we don’t have the benefit of access to vast open spaces of green. With apartment living, you might be lucky to have a balcony and maybe a communal space to enjoy. Just because you don’t have a garden doesn’t mean you can’t get involved in gardening, though! For a beginner, it’s actually better to start small anyway: if you kick things off with a big gardening project, the maintenance of it can be overwhelming, increasing the chances that you’ll be sick of it all before you even really begin! Starting your gardening journey via a small “kitchen garden,” as they’re referred to, sometimes can be the best way forward.

Think about what types of plants you would like to have in your garden. What would enhance your life, for example? Do you regularly buy flowers to make your indoors more attractive? Do you cook with herbs a lot? These are the types of questions that should frame what goes into your garden. If you like using lots of basil in your pasta sauces, begin by buying a basil plant and caring for that on your kitchen window. It will bring a lovely pungent smell to your kitchen and allow you to have access to an instant supply for your Italian cooking nights!

Visit your local garden centre at a time when it’s not busy. Saturday mornings in garden centres is usually extremely busy, so go at an off-peak time instead to ensure that you can speak to the staff in comfort. Explain to them that you’re a beginner and that you’d appreciate some guidance. These people are usually passionate about plants and most would like to help you become passionate about plants and gardening, too.

The guys at Crowe Sawmills have put together the infographic below, which summarizes everything you’d need to know about a starter garden. It outlines the basic equipment you might need and explains what plants to begin with, some of the terminology you might encounter on your new gardening journey and lots more! However, as a beginner, take it at your own pace and do what you can to see how you can kick start your gardening experience. Check out the full graphic below for all the details!
